Also known as: The best thing I ate at City Fest, Destination Tots, and The Anti-Waffle-Fry.
I can’t claim to have made the trip to Hillcrest just for these tots (though now I’m planning to). My friend Kevin and I were already in the area for City Fest when we saw the station set up outside of R-Gang Eatery. After filling Kevin in on San Diego’s resident celebrity chef who is actually still a chef, he decided we should grab some food. Good call.
Maybe even more impressive than the food was that Chef Sweeney was handling all of it…as in by himself. He had one friendly employee to help take orders, and deal with that weird kid who wouldn’t go away until he got to interrupt a very busy chef *waves*. Otherwise it was just the man, a small grill, and some warming trays for his tots. The brats were good, but…
is saying, “the perfect tator tot only better” description enough? A crispy exterior lead way to riced potato interspersed with pockets of cheddar and chive, good enough on their own but the chipotle ranch is a worthy addition. I’ll be back for an actual visit. Underground tots? You bet.
Didn’t Kevin look great?

Is it just wishful thinking, or do those tots look like they’re sprinkled with some powdered sugar?
These pictures are great, Rod. I love tots, and these look phenomenal
Thanks Eric, these ones were actually taken with the phone rather than the camera. Glad they came out so well…photogenic tots
Katie – that is a bit of wishful thinking, but I do know they have several sweet offerings – including a well known monkeybread. If/WHEN you come to SD, I think they should top your list of brunches.
Finally catching up a bit. Looks like a blast bro
