Damn was I excited when I saw these in the store tonight, the checkout lady even asked me if there were any left. I’ve been looking all over for these ever since my man Marvo mentioned them over at the Impulsive Buy.
Pumpkin pie is fantastic and hey, aside from unfrosted poptarts (aka the dumbest breakfast pastry ever) I’m rarely disappointed by a pack of Kellog’s namesake sugared rectangles. So how did the new guys stack up?
Decent. You don’t get overloaded with a pumpkin scent when you open the package, but you can smell some pumpkin pie spice if you sniff the pastry themselves. The frosting is the familiar sprinkled top that you would find on your classic strawberry or blueberry poptart. I personally feel that they should have went with a frosting similar to that of a brown sugar & cinnamon poptart and THEN added sprinkles.
The filling itself isn’t quite like that of a pumpkin pie, it’s actually just like the “jelly” centers of the fruit flavors, only pumpkin flavored. Like a pumpkin butter jelly hybrid. I did some surgery to try and show this, I also realized how similar the filling looks to earwax.
I can’t say I was terribly impressed by these; they’re tasty enough but I’m not exactly hiding the box from my roommate. Maybe I’ll save a few and send them across the way to Jim’s chocolate mission..the UK seems to be severely lacking in their pop-tart variety.
As for you fellow Americans (uh-mur-icans) I’d give them a shot if you’re the type to keep a box in the house. I’m glad I tried them, but I’m not upset that they’re a limited edition.
Grade: B-
Cookie madness also did a review. She seemed to share a similar feeling

MERKA!
Rod, your breaking my balls mate.
Most unfortunate to hear that the HFCS glory that is pop tarts has failed with their seasonal flavors.
Worse case scenario, we eat more pumpkin pie.
Everyone's reviewing these! I'll have to jump on the bandwagon.
Nick, que?
Gabe..they aren't bad my man. I'd try a box..but they don't replace strawberry or blueberry for me.
foodj – please do, I would like to see how a storm trooper handles a giant breakfast pastry.
Oh I am jealous! We just have two flavors of pop tarts over here in germany and this one is looking great!
one of my friends says that. He never says A-mer-i-ca, it's just… Mer'ka.
Rod, I'm a big fan of your work since discovering your blog. You left a comment over at one of my sites, Does It Hit The Spot, on the 3 Musketeers Truffle review I did.
You do good work, sir. Keep it up.
Silent – I feel for you. I hope that at least one of the varieties is strawberry or blueberry.
Nick – I should have read my post for context clues, your friend is right.
Zac – thanks my man, the feeling is mutual.
All I can think when I see this is, "Someone's going to have a really sad Thanksgiving…"
I love pumpkin pie, though. I eat it any chance I get. (Easter Pie, anyone?) And I also love to eat PopTarts for breakfast. So even though I'll celebrate Thanksgiving this year with a good old regular pie, I'm actually really excited to try these.
I can't find these anywhere!!! I really do want to try them. Great Review.
I second the “unfrosted poptarts being the dumbest breakfast pastry ever” notion. Seriously, that’s the best part. And why of all flavors is gingerbread not frosted? Gingerbread houses, gingerbread men, know what they have on them? Icing! C’mon kelloggs, you’re killin me!
